Many people ask "Why does the event have to be overnight?"
It is quite simple really. The Relay is designed to demonstrate what a Cancer patient is going through. The ups and downs, the celebrations and lonely times, the dark of night, and finally the sun rising again, giving HOPE that this disease will finally be gone for all mankind. |

| The Past |
In the past 12 years, the LR RFL has seen and done many things! Our first year, we were located at the Roller Field, and had 8 teams to spend the night with!
Our high team mark was 92 teams. Because of the awesome opportunity for many other communities to take the Relay to their own respective towns, we no longer have them coming to the LR RFL.
We are holding strong at approximately 40-50 wonderful teams each year. |

| The History |
| In May 1985, Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon and avid runner, took the first step of his 24-hour walk/run around a track in Tacoma, Washington. He clocked 83 miles, raising $27,000 to support the American Cancer Society. The following year, 220 supporters on 19 teams joined Dr. Klatt in this overnight event, and the American Cancer Society Relay For Life was born.
Over the last 23 years, Relay For Life has spread to 4,000 communities in the United States and nine foreign countries and has raised over $1 billion to help fight cancer. What began as one man’s statement in the fight against cancer has led to the development of a worldwide event to help banish cancer. |
